A great place to grow a smile.

Preventing Cavities with Proper Dental Care

Stop dental decay before it starts. Schedule a preventive service today.

Regular brushing, flossing, and semi-annual cleanings are the foundation of good dental hygiene, but there’s a little extra you can do to help keep your child’s smile cavity-free. Here at Lake Jeanette Orthodontics & Pediatric Dentistry, we take cavity prevention seriously. We’re committed to fighting pediatric dental decay one smile at a time.

We offer several preventive services aimed at just that—stopping dental decay. Dental sealants and fluoride can be applied during one of your child’s routine cleanings and take no more than five minutes to apply, but they offer invaluable protection against cavities.

Dental Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that helps build teeth and bones. In children, it can help strengthen enamel or the tooth’s outer layer, reducing the chance of cavities. While adults can benefit from fluoride as well, it’s particularly important for kids as their teeth are still developing.

In cases, fluoride treatments can even reverse a cavity in its earliest stages, as the enamel begins to decay. We usually apply fluoride treatments after a routine dental cleaning. Applied as a gel or varnish, we have lots of fun flavors.

Dental Sealants

While enamel is a tooth’s natural barrier from bacteria, tartar, plaque, and food bits, there’s no harm in giving it a little extra reinforcement—but there are a lot of benefits.

Sealants place a thin white layer over the surface of teeth, blocking out bacteria and filling in small fissures that may collect food. The result is healthier teeth that are far less likely to suffer from cavities or decay. Dental sealants are 100% safe and last several years.

Since sealants also smooth out tiny bumps and ridges on the surface of teeth, they can often make brushing and flossing a bit easier too. Because it is necessary to clean teeth before applying sealants, we often apply them after a routine cleaning. Like fluoride treatments, the process is fast, painless, and comes with no downtime. Sealants are typically only applied to molars and pre-molars.
